Abstract:

Three manuscripts, primarily Franciscan, relating to the origins, theogony, and history of the early inhabitants of Mexico: 1. Origen de los Mexicanos. [Mexico, 16th cent.] Copy of a fragment from a report on the first tribes to inhabit Mexico, prepared by anonymous Franciscan friars at the request of Juan Cano. 4 p. 2. Historia de los Mexicanos por sus pinturas. [Mexico, 16th cent.] Copy of a treatise by Toribio de Motolinía dealing with Indian accounts of the creation of the world and succeeding developments, including the arrival in Mexico of its early inhabitants, based upon Indian painted and oral records. There are 20 chapters and an appended table of events from 1351 to 1519. 19 p.
(Con't) 3. Notes in French on the theogony, mythology, and ancient history of Mexico, followed by a genealogical report in Spanish on early Indian rulers. The latter section is probably copied from material compiled by Franciscan Archbishop Zumárraga at the request of Juan Cano. 19 p.
